The year 1816 was a landmark for British coinage. The mint was moved from the Tower of London to a new site on Tower Hill and steam powered minting machinery built by Boulton and Watt replaced the old hand operated presses. Significantly, new coinage was produced with an intrinsic value substantially below the face value of each coin - the first official token coinage in the world. Gold sovereigns are probably the world's most famous and recognisable coins. They are extremely hard to replicate, smaller than a heavy 1oz so easier to carry and sell. Don't get caught up on the American Eagle hype, the Gold Sovereign is a superior coin, more well respected and has been around 180 years longer and still going strong today. Apex check the quality of the Gold Sovereigns they sell, they are all genuine so you have no concerns, if you are concerned consider the slabbed Sovereigns, from NGC or PCGS

I received a 1958 which is by far the most common mintage of the first Elizabeth portrait design (at 8.7 million!) So your chances are very good that this is the date you will also receive! Nevertheless, the coin I received is very nice. Good luster and definitely BU condition. APMEX's picture is quite representative of the coin I received. As always, I was very pleased with the service and professionalism of APMEX. That's what keeps me coming back as a repeat customer. BTW, 2016 ushers in Elizabeth's fifth portrait, so these early ones should appreciate nicely over the years.

And it really is BU, most pleasing. These coins are great to pull out when you want to keep the kids interested in a history lesson!

Bought this Sovergn of a young Elizabeth II as a companion coin to my Victoria Sovergn collection. The coin is comparable with its young Victoria counterpart. Now that HRME II has recently surpassed her great grandmother as the longest reigning monarch, expect the early versions of the Elizabeth Sovergns to become more and more difficult to find. The strike on the coin I received was weak and luster was not as nice as expected. Still, a worthy coin that will grow in its value and significance, and still reasonably priced. Recommend purchasing this coin while it'sl available. Thanks APMEX!

Ordered my first British sovereign because it was on sale (reduced premium over spot) and I find them attractive. Got 1965 that was BU as advertised, very similar to the one pictured. Fair number of contact marks, and some light copper haze on the obverse, but generally a very nice looking coin. Ordered late on the 3rd, received on the 8th (Labor Day intervened), in secure packaging. At just under $300, I feel like I got a decent price for this coin.
